Ava asked:

My book is finished, and is in the “teen fiction” genre. It is my first novel, and I really need advice here. Thanks so much!

Research, research, research. You may hear about a great agent, but it may not be the right fit for you. First off, browse through sites of writers. You can find lists of agents that are legit. Then, you need to research these agents to make a list of the ones that you deal in your genre and that you like. Then, you have to create a great query letter to get their attention. You may send out dozens of queries before you find an agent that is interested in reading your work. Don’t give up. It is worth it. But remember, your manuscript must be at its best. Edit, edit, edit. Don’t send it out unless it shines and sparkles. It would be horrible to grab and agents interest, but loose the agent because your work is not up to par. Good luck!
you may want to look at the agents at this site.

You can check the reputation of any agent or publisher at scam busting websites like writer beware or preditors & editors.

Learn as much as you can about the publishing industry so you can spot a scam before it bites you.

Things to remember that will help you avoid the scams
1 - real publishers pay you, you do not pay them
2 - real agents get paid after they sell your work, not before
3 - being ‘available to order online’ is not the same as having the book on shelves at real stores (where most people buy their books)
